USS John S McCain captain relieved

Naval officer who posed for pictures with a rifle scope on backwards removed from command.

Something like that has to be a huge red flag for how much the crew thinks of the CO; they can save your ass if they like you buy also let you bury yourself if they don't, and give a subtle nudge here and there.

I was about to say something similar. There is no way he put that scope on the rifle, himself. Somebody did it that way, on purpose, to send a message.

I’d also like to point out that his M4 RAS wasn’t on the carbine correctly either.

The top (3/4 of it) section wasn’t locked on the barrel nut and thus the top section and the Left and Right are pointing downward not in axis with the bore.

Correctly installed M4RAS below.

Honestly it says a lot about him and the crew that he was allowed to pose like that.

Actually he was joking around for the Camera. And momentarily fogot that all humor tends to be subjective...Not to worry people have constantly been reminding him of that fact .

If you make a joke, you need to ensure people know it's a joke.

Claiming after the fact that something dumb you did was a "joke" never works.

Is this referring to Chrétien? It was an inappropriate set-up, nothing he had control or awareness of until after the fact, and made the CAF pay for the stupidity of a few…

I found US Army officers to have zero sense of humor. Or maybe I misjudged them. Could the USN be similar?

I assumed it was about the USN skipper.

I''m pretty confident the PM was not "in" on the joke with the helmet.
Ack.

No, he most definitely wasn’t. It’s was a dumbass move for which a few in LdSH should hang their head in shame for the rest of their lives. It was inappropriate and cost the CAF dearly.

I like how the Marines also pointed this out on their own twitter, showing some marines shooting at targets on a ship;

I've never touched anything on the rail system, is it not a directional mount, or is the same either way so you can buy some accessories and put them on either side (if they have an offset)? Is there even a point of having the handle if it's that far back? I thought it was there for a better grip forward to give you better control, and just more ergonomic and practical than just holding the handguard.

The RAS is just 1913 rail at the 12, 3, 6, 9.

Generally the vertical grip is placed wherever the shooter wants, but yes the further out the more leverage one has - but depending on the size and strength of the shooter, that may required arm extension past where the shooter is able to support it effectively.

It is incredibly funny and one for the ages. Almost as good as a pie in the face 🤣

This type if thing also happens in our Navy where weapon handling skills are... to say the least... pretty terrible.

I am certain if you handed one of our skippers are rifle with the sight on backwards, they would do the exact same thing.

Is there a person or two aboard one of His Majesty's Canadian Ships that are conversant with Small Arms ?

It's supposed to be the Deck Department but they are generally speaking, very poor and haven't kept up with the times. Their drills, TTPs, etc are to be frank... 40 years out of date and straight from the 80s. When the Navy was setting up NTOG, they brought in some fellows from CANSOFCOM to do an audit of the school that was being run by the Bosn's.... they were extremely critical of what was being taught.

NTOG was doing a lot of good things in terms of raising the overall standards of the Fleet, which is exactly why the Navy would want to get rid of them 😄.

I'll give you an example:

We had a boarding party show up to a range with EOTechs and backup iron sights on their weapons. 80% of the EOTechs had burnt out batteries and the backup iron sights were installed backwards by the Deck Dept 🤣. Let's not mention the rust due to a lack of cleaning.

And we think the RCN has the discipline to be responsible for something as serious as a Nuclear Submarine... when they can't even keep a basic small arm functional 🙃
