The Russians began reneging on INF while Obama was in office.

Defending Trump is definitely not my 'go to,' but some of us prefer facts even when they don't support our biases.

Agreed.

I don't really like Trump but he had little choice in this matter.

Ok but does that really mean the US has to re-arm in that category?

The EU, as the font of peace in Europe, should be the one choosing to arm (or not).
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

It will be interesting to see how we approach this problem either with a brand new ballistic missile or more likely IMO a cruise missile which would be more survivable.

So what is the solution?

Absolutely not

But maybe the Russians learned some lessons from George Kennan and Containment.  This merely contributes further to taking advantage of:  self-inflicted trade wars with the knock-on effect upon US consumers;  isolation through abusing allies, which has caused increased trade agreements that exclude the US;  and with this, another step towards the US setting new records [something Trump routinely claims] in deficit spending -- because you know, the inevitable American response will be to develop something bigger, better, brighter -- regardless of the cost or need -- appeasing the defence industry that contributes massively to elections and lobbyists... (and the 'strategic expertise' of Sean Hannity and the Base).

All that to say, not necessarily... but inevitably.

So what is the solution?
For starters, I'd recommend finding someone in Trump's Cabinet who can read, then have them dust off a copy of Lawrence Freedman's The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy.

Go to the chapter that explains that you don't have to match each and every capability as long as you have a credible nuclear deterrent -- in this case, a political leader who no one doubts would be crazy enough to launch nukes into Moscow in response to any Intermediate-Range strike (probably believing that there would be no adverse effects for him, since he'd be golfing somewhere).

But again, "Russia has INF?  We have to have more! "
