Russia Challenges US in Tank Biathlon

Blurring the line between sports and warfare, the Russian army premiered a new sport – tank biathlon – and invited US crews to compete.

Quote:

“We’ve invited our American colleagues to participate…and our invitation was accepted by US Secretary of Defense [Chuck] Hagel,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Saturday.

Italy and Germany also agreed to send their teams to compete with Russian and US tank crews, Shoigu said, adding that the event will take place sometime next year.

Russia will host the world’s first ever tank biathlon championship next week. The country’s best tank crews will compete against each other at a firing range outside Moscow, the winners then taking on competitors from Armenia, Belorussia and Kazakhstan.

The new sport allows showcasing the quality of Russian tanks, comparing them against foreign analogues, Shoigu’s deputy Yury Borisov said Saturday.

Love the WoT ad on that article.

Nothing new.  Canada created such a competition, Canadian Army Trophy (CAT), for NATO and it was run up until the early '90's.  The trophy, a sterling silver Centurion, is now at the Armour School.

Always an indicator of some of the best crew Gunnery skills, but not necessarily the best tank.

This sounds like quite an interesting event.

Already on Wikipedia - what the course appears to entail (with the usual Wikipedia caveats)....

.... Tanks go on a three-round route of 6-10 kilometers.

During the first round crews fire at targets positioned at a distances of 1800, 1700, 1500 meters.

The second round firing is at targets imitating an anti-tank mortar (RPG) squad and an infantry unit - these targets are at a distance of 600-700 meters, and must be engaged with a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.

The third round targeting is at an anti-tank gun and ATGM unit by use of the NSV 12.7mm remotely controlled anti-aircraft Heavy machine gun at a distance of 1200 meters.

Like in usual biathlon firing misses lead to an extra round, 500 meters long.

On the final round tanks have to go through various terrain obstacles, here an error (missed or crashed obstacle) lead to a 10-seconds increment to crew's final timing ....

Surprise, surprise...the Russians won the competition they hosted. Didn't the Kazakhs, Ukrainians and all these other CIS states all use the same MBT as the Russians?

For the Win – Russia Triumphs in Tank Biathlon

The racing field dwarfs the 40-ton machines and is clouded by smoke. The announcer’s deep voice struggles to cut through the booming guns and whistling signal rockets, and the engines’ roar is deafening as brightly-painted killing machines thunder past, each leaving a plume of dust in its wake.

The idea is pretty simple – just like a regular biathlon, only with tanks.

US, Germany – Bring it On
Shoigu also said that the United States and Germany, Russia’s rivals on the arms exports market, were invited to bring their own tanks to compete against Russia next year.

After Saturday’s race, the US and German military attachés both said that their respective superiors are still deciding whether to accept Shoigu’s invitation, though the German officer sounded excited about it.

Shoigu previously claimed that US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel had approved US participation in 2014, but Colonel R. Taft Blackburn, US Army Attaché in Russia, said this was not the case.

“It is an interesting idea, but there are many issues at stake,” was all that Blackburn said when asked by RIA Novosti whether the Pentagon is considering the risk that Russia could interpret US unwillingness to take part as weakness.
Blackburn then beat a hasty retreat into the VIP stand, as an Armenian tank thundered past.

Tank Biathlon 2015
The 2015 edition of this competition is next week! And the Chinese team will be reportedly using their own non-Russian-made tank, the Type 96, which is not a clone of the T-72, T-80 or T-90 tanks most of the other teams are using.

Russia to Host World Military Games: China Brought its Own Tank
The ‘World Championship Tank Biathlon 2015’ will kick off on August 1 near Moscow.

Teams from 17 countries, including Belarus, China, Egypt, India, Nicaragua and Tajikistan, are currently gathering at the Alabino firing range in the suburbs of Moscow to compete in this year’s World Tank Biathlon Championship RT reports.

The opening ceremony of the military games, organized by the Russian Ministry of Defense, is set to take place on August 1 with the competition scheduled to last 15 days.

“Every team gets four armored vehicles: three for the competition and a spare one. According to the rules, the maintenance of the vehicles is the responsibility of the crews themselves,” RT explains.

All teams save one will use Russian-made colored-coded T-72B3 tanks. “During the tank contest, the vehicles are subjected to the kind of extremes they would encounter on a real battlefield,” RT observes.

Chinese Type 96 MBTs joining Russia and other former Warsaw Pact tank teams at this year's edition of tank biathlon:

China will use upgraded Type 96A main battle tank for Tank Biathlon 2016 competition in Russia.

The upgraded Chinese Type 96A main battle tanks (MBT) are going to participate in the Tank Biathlon 2016 competition, according to Russian defense analysts and local sources. The Type 96A was showed for the first time to the public, during the military parade at Beijing in 2009.

IHS Jane's 360 - 12 July 2016

One of China's biggest military manufacturers, China North Industries Corporation (Norinco), has developed a new variant of its Type 96 (ZTZ-96) main battle tank (MBT) in time to participate in the 30 July to 16 August International Army Games organised by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Unconfirmed Chinese reports indicate that computer and digital communication systems have been improved, allowing tank commanders to benefit from common integrated intelligence of the battlefield processed at higher levels of command.

The reports also point to improvements reportedly made to the T-96B's engine, exhaust system, suspension, and running wheels.

The engine and new rear-mounted exhaust system appear to have benefited from those developed for Norinco's VT-4 export MBT. If this is the case, the T-96B may have a 1,200 hp liquid-cooled diesel engine.

At least five T-96Bs arrived in Russia on 7 July to take part in the Masters of Automobile and Tank Hardware competition, according to Russian media reports. (CJDBY website)
